With Christmas but a few days away now its time to get organised.

Hopefully by now all of the presents should have been bought and wrapped. If this is the case, then hats off to you as you are way ahead of schedule. From my own point of view, I still have shed loads to get through and I am beginning to really panic that it’s not all going to be done.

When you work full time its hard trying to organise everything, but Im sure by the time Christmas gets here somehow it will all be sorted.

It’s not only the presents you have to worry about though. All of the food needs to be organised. This in itself can be a mammoth job. My family love their roast turkey and naturally we have to have all of the trimmings that accompany it.

I am a bit silly though as it takes me most of the morning to prepare the dinner and then when I lay the table, I don’t do it justice. Out comes my old broken crockery, along with all of my mismatched cutlery. As it’s only been us lot before I haven’t had to worry, but this year I have my whole family coming round, so I think I am going to have to up my game a bit.

I am looking to buy some new tableware especially for the occasion. I have seen some I really love, and although its a bit pricey, I think its going to be worth every penny to go one better than my sister!!

At Christmas because my sister is pretty loaded, she likes to impress us all. Last year she gave us all wine gifts. She choose a wine cooler for me. It wasnt just a bog standard cooler, it was sterling silver. It is absolutely beautiful and to be truthful I really do treasure it.

I know the cooler would have set her back a bob or two, so it seems a real waste to put a cheap bottle of wine in it, so I am going to have to blow the budget and buy some decent wine. I think I will have an expensive bottle to start with, then once we have downed a few glasses and chilled out a bit, I can bring out the cheaper wine.

Whatever happens though, I know we will have a great Christmas, as all the family will be together and having fun and thats what its all about.

I get asked a lot about all the energy drinks that are available nowadays from people who want to know if all their outrageous claims are true.Young consumers are especially interested in getting an energy boost that will help them win.

A couple good questions asked will find out if energy drinks will boost your energy and whether they are good for you. You are going to want to know if these drugs have a magical formula and if they will help you lose weight. Let’s put it this way, energy drinks are not some ways that you can shed weight quickly.

Most of these energy drinks are high fructose corn syrup mix into carbonated water to give you a huge gut. Somehow throwing in some B vitamins into a mix of Torre and caffeine is supposed to be healthy. taurine To begin with, the high fructose syrup is nothing but calories that build up your abdominal fat.

In fact these calories are worse than if you just ate refined sugar.

If you want to go the route of the sugar-free versions of energy drinks, you then we will have to deal with all the chemicals and artificial sweeteners.

Besides the chemicals, some experts believe that the artificial sweeteners actually encourage calorie consumption and weight gain.

It will take some time to discuss this subject so we will do that later.Generally speaking, artificial sweeteners and chemicals put into food are not something you want in your body.

Then there is the caffeine: do not you get energy from that? No, because you really only get energy from proteins carbohydrates and fats.

You can get some benefit from caffeine and that it will help you stay alert by stimulating the nervous system. If you drink a lot of coffee, the extra caffeine probably will not affect you much anyhow. Besides you would be better off getting your caffeine from a natural source such as white or oolong tea.

Natural tea will also help you because of their antioxidants. How about the blend of taurine and B vitamins there are now in energy drinks energy drinks?

You can get taurine from any source of protein, and your body will quickly eliminate those B vitamins. Healthy foods to eat will get you the nutrition you need.

Vitamins from natural sources are absorbed more on the body than they are from the chemicals found in energy drinks.

So, energy drinks should get a huge thumbs down, because of their false advertising, and dangerous effects on the body.
Try making your own energy drinks with a mix of pomegranate juice, natural tea, and whey protein.

Jon Griffin ? 2010

Most people know that eating less fat will help you lose weight. Most of us hate “diet” food, and that is the root of the problem. The diet industry has several studies that can help you avoid that fate. By using some simple food substitutes you can make your food with less fat and that means less calories. Save your life with some easy to learn cooking tips and practices.

Applesauce – The Wonder Substitute

Reducing fat calories in your baking can be done with just a few simple cooking substitutions. A great way to make food that your family loves without sacrificing the recipe quality is to learn some low-fat basic cooking techniques. You can use the simple to remember unsweetened applesauce substitute. 1/4 cup of applesauce can be substituted for 1/4 cup of oil, it is a simple one to one conversion.

I am sure your family, like mine, loves banana bread. 1/2 cup of oil is a lot, but that is what most of my recipes call for. I always worried about adding all of that fat to the recipe and how all that oil would affect the health of my family. Because of this I had to quit making the recipe. My families health and well-being were much more important to me than the complaints they had before they even tried the food. Since I discovered the super secret applesauce cooking substitution, I simply substituted 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce for the oil. My family was shocked! The banana bread was flavorful and moist. I found out that no one could tell the difference. I feel much better knowing that they are not eating an unhealthy snack.

Begin Slowly, One Recipe At A Time

Another one of the great cooking substitutions that I did not know about is substituting 1/2 cup of evaporated fat free milk can be substituted for 1/2 cup of heavy cream. This saves a lot of calories and is actually a healthy substitute for most recipes and it saves everyone from eating all those unhealthy fat calories while still allowing me to make the foods everyone loves.

Low-Fat Substitutions Could Save Your Life

If you take the time to learn about these healthy cooking substitutions you will notice a big change in the amount of fat you and your family consume daily, monthly, and yearly. The obesity rate in the United States rises yearly and research has found that many Americans gain about ten pounds per year. You can reduce this risk of weight gain to both yourself and your family by retraining and rethinking the way you cook. If you take the time to learn some of these low-fat substitutions you can improve your health and that could make a big difference in your life.

Australia has long been considered a big player in the global wine industry and this has to a large extent been down to its ideal grape growing conditions. However, Fiji and New Zealand have also come onto the scene in recent years and has increased their market share largely as a result of their flexible wine producing policies.

In the news recently was the high-profile contentious issue of wine producers being able to mix together red and white wine, and call the end product ros?. Classically ros? has been made by removing the white juice mixture from the red grape skins at just the right time so that it doesnt absorb so much of the colour. However, this method has been somewhat ‘adapted’ by some producers who are feeling the pinch in the recession and many are simply adding a small amount of red wine to white and calling it ros?.

Countries such as France, widely considered the finest wine producing country in the world, were not best pleased with this mutilation of ros? wine and did not agree for it to be sold in their country, or even be given as wine gifts. However, those countries that have not set such strict rules for themselves, such as those in Australasia and Eastern Europe have profited from their liberalism. A spokesman from the New Zealand alcohol authority defended his countrys move by stating that people are free to consume whichever wine they wish. The companies that produce this blended form of ros? wine do not use any trickery to try and sell it as the traditionally made variety, and there are clear differences in the pricing. The spokesman argued that if people can make milk chocolate in a thousand different ways, why can the same not be done for ros??

A number of the countries in Australasia have even started fully blending standard wine varieties together to get new drinks. In Fiji for example you can buy Chenin Blanc mixed with Pinot Grigio and Tempranillo blended with Cabernet Franc. Mirroring the laid back approach of New Zealand, the Fijian wine makers suggest that wine is able to be blended just as easily and with the same success rate as whisky. They state that companies all over the world, and in particular Scotland, produce some very fine blended whiskies that not only often taste superior to single malts, but that are also able to sell at more modest prices. Next they will be telling us which tableware we must use when consuming the wine, stated one official.

The natives of Fiji have really taken a liking to this new blended wine, with around 150,000 bottles sold last year alone. When compared to the wine consumption of some of the top bottles in the world, this figure is relatively low, but considering that the population of Fiji is not much more than 750,000, you can see just how successful this wine really is. The blended wine is already drunk in many of the surrounding countries, but there are hopes to extend the export to every country and the Fiji producers are confident it will catch on.

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to enjoy a bit of a boozy weekend in Dublin. My other half had been invited over by one of the suppliers his firm does business with. Everything was paid for and all we had to do was get ourselves to the airport for our flight to Dublin.

We were met at the airport by our host and he swiftly whisked us off to his house so we could unpack. You should have seen my face when I saw how big his house was – it was enormous. He had everything you could ever imagine – a swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, gym and even a home cinema.

Waiting for us in his kitchen was some beautiful Australian wine, nicely chilled in a wine cooler and bottle openers all ready to go.

Our host was a real wine buff and has his own wine racks down in his cellar. He imports a lot of wine from Australia and was explaining that the cellar has to be kept at just the right temperature, which is quite difficult at times. He went on to say that if conditions aren’t correct, then that’s when problems can happen. One example he was telling us about was if the humidity is too high then this will make the corks dry out and this in turn allows air to get into the bottle and oxidise the wine, which would of course be disastrous.

After we had finished our drinks we were off for a night in the Temple Bar area. It was absolutely fantastic and the Irish are so hospitable and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble and they are really genuine people. My husband was in his element drinking his beloved Guinness. Mind you I think the next morning he was wishing he hadn’t had quite as much to drink.

We had a brilliant weekend and it is certainly something I would love to do again. If we go again though, I think perhaps we shouldn’t drink quite so much alcohol!

If youre not from the region the terms “Creole” of “Cajun” may be a bit of a mystery to you. These are used to describe two types of cooking that are popular in Louisiana. Creole is often described as using a more traditional approach to the recipe while Cajun is used more broadly as food that it particularly spicy. Cajun cooking is generally known to be more spicy or peppery. There are a lot of choices and both styles are unique.

The Basics of Cajun Cooking

Cajun cooking really exploded in the 1980’s. When people hear the words Cajun cooking, they often think of blackened chicken. Even though this is strongly associated with Cajun cooking it’s not what many Cajuns consider traditional.

Cajuns are an ethnic group that is found in Louisiana. They settled there after being exiled from Canada. The roots of the Cajuns derive from the Acadian people from France who went on to settle in Canada. The French dialect they speak is very distinct. They brought their culture and traditions to the United States after being exiled from Canada. These traditions remain active today in the form of Cajun cooking.

There are many traditional recipes that have been passed down for generations. Many of these Cajuns will guard their secret recipes and keep it within the culture. In this type of cooking, often exact measurement is not used. You find a lot of “a handful of this” and a “little bit of that” in the recipes.

Many different spices and lots of garlic, butter, and fat are used in Cajun cooking. These recipes may not be the healthiest, but they do have flavor.

Ideas for Cajun cooking

Many Cajun cooking recipes involve seafood as this is a local mainstay in Louisiana. There are many recipes that use ingredients such as onions, mayonnaise, mustard, butter, lemon juice, and of course a lot of spices. These ingredients are combined and then poured on the catfish and baked. Shrimp is commonly used, but so is alligator and crawfish. These Cajun cooking selections make for an authentic choice when attempting to create a Cajun style feast. There are many Cajun cooking books available that can assist in making Cajun style food.

A wide variety of spices are used in Cajun cooking to build a depth of flavor. Using pepper, parsley flakes, garlic powder, hot pepper, curry powder, and people can make their own Cajun spices at home. Experiment with spicy flavors and make your very own and unique Cajun spices.

Cajun cooking is a fun and creative form of the culinary arts. Making your own style of Cajun spices to be used on everything from French fries to chicken, will add a new taste and texture to all your meals.

If wishes came true we would all be blessed with a heat regulated and air-purified wine cellar. These mean you can put your feet up and not concern yourself with your wines welfare as they will always be in the best environment to age beautifully. Sadly, this is not often the case and so most of us need to use what we have available to us. Here is some great advice for storing your wines safely.

Location. Your bottles, both white and red wine, are best placed in a cool room, away from the light and with moderate humidity levels. The perfect temperature to maintain your wines at is 10? to 16? C (50? to 61? F).Anything higher than this will lead to a decrease in wine quality but anything higher than 25? C will seriously damage the wine’s flavors and body. leaving the bottle in direct sunlight can not only discolor it but also affect the air temperature inside the bottle. The level of humidity in the room can cause the cork in the bottle to expand or contract. This can result in air forcing its way into the bottle and causing oxidation, a well known negative that occurs when wine has prolonged contact with oxygen.

Positioning. You should position the wines on their side or at a slight angle when storing them. This is due to a real risk of the cork losing its natural moisture and contracting if not in contact with the wine. This can cause the wine to suffer from oxidation, a mentioned previously.

Display. You don’t allows want your wines tucked away in a dark room. Sometimes you want to bring them out for the world to see. A good choice would be a wooden wine cabinet because these tend to maintain a steady temperature and you can also store your decanters, dinnerware and other glassware etc in there too. Don’t pick any that have a glass cover or doors as they can often trap heat inside when there is light on them.

Can it really be possible? Has the traditional flag waver of the British takeaway industry fish and chips been surpassed by other favourites? Once the stalwart of takeaway choice in this country, we are now informed that no longer does it rule the roost. Below is a list of interesting facts and figures to support this:

The traditional English takeaway is now more popular in Dublin than anywhere in the UK. It may have something to do with the larger population of Chinese people in England than is known to exist in Ireland. Most people know that chip shops have become the attraction for the Chinese, who sprinkle a little of their own culture into the business.

?Indian takeaways rule, except in London and the North West, where Chinese food is king. The reason why this is the case is fairly easy to appreciate, if you consider the demographic makeup of particular communities. The largest of the Indian communities are based on the other side of the Pennines, in the North East.

? Indian and Chinese meals together make up three out of every five takeaways.

More than 1,200 people were quizzed for the website Just-Eat.co.uk. They found the average annual takeaway bill is ?550, which equates to about ?45 per person per month. I find this figure amazing, especially during difficult economic times. I would have thought that people would be looking to save that money and organise there own catering from home. I mean, how difficult is it to cook something in your own kitchen? Apparently, a large number of people find the kitchen anathema due to the depressing lack of light at this time of the year!

Sales more than double after the clocks go back in October. There could be a number of reasons why this is so, but possibly the obvious one is the cooling of the temperature. When the temperature outside gets colder, we don’t generally go out much to buy our food, either in a restaraunt or a supermarket.

After the clocks have gone back and the nights are darker and colder, we go to work in the dark and come home when it is dark. It is miserable, cold and sometimes wet, the sofas looks appealing, the idea of going into the kitchen to prepare something or going out to a food shop is not an appealing thought.

A survey conducted by www.just-eat.co.uk the UK’s leading online takeaway portal, asked 3,015 people in the UK what they estimate they spend on chinese food a month and combined it with the data from their website. The results showed that on average:

? Each individual across the UK spends ?550 a year on takeaway food – ?45 a month.

? A third of those surveyed would prefer to stay in at weekends with friends or family, order a takeaway and laze around in nightclothes rather than dressing up and going out.

The weather was a large influence in the decision, as

? 76% of people prefer homemade meals in the warmer months, to eat in the garden or on the barbeque.

In the summer, large numbers of people from the UK head for hotter climates for some sun and sand, spending on average ?550 for a week. Following this when winter begins its approach, we reach for the computer, conduct a quick local restaurant search and spend in the region of ?550 per person per year.

Our research shows that when the clocks go back in October:

? Takeaway orders more than double with 104% more in sales

? Women said preferred a night in with a fella or a good night in with their friends, rather that a visit to the pub when the climate turned cold.

As winter draws in and the count down to Christmas begins:

?38% of women claimed no guilt for ordering a takeaway meal than possibly during summer time.89% of those asked agreed that a takeaway on the weekends is something that they look forward to.

?The number of people who buy a takeaway on both Friday and Saturday night was a staggering 61%.

Rice cookers have been hugely popular in many parts of Asia for quite a while, however it hasn’t been until more recently that they’ve gained such a large fan base here in the west. Many people have grown to love their rice cookers and those that have ever tried one never want to go back to cooking their rice in a pot on the stove.

Due to many varying reasons, rice is becoming ever more popular in the west, but cooking rice can be time consuming and if you mess up you can easily ruin an entire meal. Using a rice cooker is incredibly simple and makes cooking rice all but foolproof.

The rice that is made in rice cookers is perfect every time, it won’t over cook it, it won’t under cook it, and as long as you put in the amount of water that it calls for you will never have anything less than perfection. They save an incredible amount of time and effort in the kitchen, allowing you time to spend on other aspects of the meal or to take a nap.

If you feel lik you want to learn to cook, even how to make sauce, getting a rice cooker wouldn’t be a bad move, it will you can do just about anything with one. Plus, there are numerous sites out there that will start you off right by providing you numerous rice cooking tips.

What to look for when looking for your perfect rice cooker:

1) Cost of rice cookers

There is a huge difference in price between the low-end, basic rice cookers and the premium ones. In fact the cheaper rice cookers tend to cost right around $15-$30 whereas the high-end cookers will run you $150-$200 or even more. For those who are simply interested in cooking plain rice and that’s it, generally speaking the less expensive rice cookers will suffice. But for those who need to be able to cook a wide variety of types of rice, and cook them well, and who want all the different options available, only the higher priced ones will do.

Spending a bit more on your rice cooker will get you a lot of extra options. Many more expensive rice cookers come with extras such as a timer, the ability to cook various types of rice, all to perfection, or a warmer to keep your rice hot long after it’s finished cooking, without drying it out.

2) How big of a rice cooker do you need?

Rice cookers come in many different sizes, from 1 cup to well over 10 cups. Anything smaller than 3 cups isn’t recommended as you shouldn’t ever want to cook less than two cups at a time. Cooking only one cup can make the rice come out a little dry or even slightly burned.

I will typically not recommend anything less than a 5 cup rice cooker, even for single people as the price difference is negligible and you never know when you’ll need a couple extra cups. I would never buy anything less than a 3 cup rice cooker as cooking only one cup of rice at a time can over cook it.

3) More options

Rice cookers some with many different options, here is a list of things to pay attention to:
Make sure the bowl is non-stick
For flip-top lids, having a removable inner lid makes clean-up much easier
If you cook different types of rice make sure the rice cooker supports them for better results
Measuring lines on the inside of the bowl allow for more precise measuring of water.

If you enjoy rice, cook rice or plan on cooking rice regularly, then I would not recommend going without a rice cooker, it will rapidly become the centerpiece of your kitchen.
