    January 31, 2008 | By Doug In Target | Comments(0)

    LeapFrog ClickStart My First Computer

The LeapFrog ClickStart My First Computer introduces tots to the wonders of the PC and helps them learn basic computer skills. Ideal for ages three through six, this interactive toy plugs right into the television and teaches youngsters how to use a mouse and keyboard.

    A Child-Friendly Design
The ClickStart features a child-friendly wireless keyboard, plug and play console, and a child-sized mouse with a right- or-left-handed adjustable mouse pad. It transforms the TV into a PC, which allows kids to work on a big screen and the whole family to join in on the fun. The miniature mouse is perfectly formed for little fingers to point and click. Large, colored buttons make it easy for kids to learn basic keystrokes, and four friendly games create a safe, age-appropriate environment to navigate. ClickStart is built to withstand rough toddler handling, a plus for parents who want to spare their high-end desktops from child’s play. And the wireless keyboard is light and convenient to transport from place to place, so kids can bring the fun with them wherever they go.

Transform your TV into a PC for your child, complete with wireless keyboard and mouse. View larger.

Your child can click any of the icons on the desktop to play a game and learn.

    Encourages Age-Appropriate Learning
It is never too early to teach children the correct way to use a computer. The ClickStart ensures that a child’s first computing experience is age appropriate and pleasant, with engaging games that not only enhance basic computer skills, but prepare children for pre-school and kindergarten. This educational tool has four games that teach phonics, letters, animal facts, and counting, while sharpening a child’s screen navigation skills. Friendly puppy Scout guides kids through keyboard functions and allows them to work at their own pace. Techno tots can click on a faux in-box to receive their first e-mail; it even has sound for nonreaders. Should the youngster ever become stumped, a hint button gives them a clue. Additional ClickStart software packages, sold separately, feature well-known characters such as Thomas the Tank Engine, Dora the Explorer, and Nemo.

    What’s in the Box

Customer Review: Best TV Learning Toy
My son just got this from his grandparents, and I have to say I am really impressed. We’ve owned several of the TV learning toys (Little Leaps, FP Learn with Me DVD come to mind) and were not really impressed with those. This toy will teach him how to interact with a real computer, and lets him have fun doing it. My son is almost 3, and has been given a probable diagnosis of Aspergers syndrome. Small motor coordination is difficult for him at times - I LOVE that this toy lets him work on his mouse skills. He absolutely LOVES this computer, and I do too. The games seem to be varied enough not to get too monotonous, the way some preschool computer software can. We decided to hook this toy up to a small TV that isnt connected to cable, so that as far as he is concerned, its just a computer monitor. So far, so good!
Customer Review: Good preparation for using real computers
I bought this for my 2.5 year old who has been showing an interest in using the computer. The nice thing about clickstart is that it comes with a keyboard and mouse and it has a desktop with icons, so it will prepare your child to move onto a real computer. The games that come with the system are so engaging to my daughter that she gained a lot of control over both the mouse and keyboard in less than a week. I thought it would take a lot longer for her to learn mouse and keyboard control, so I was very impressed. If your child has not learned their letters, numbers and colors yet then the level 1 games that come with the system will be a good introduction. If your child already knows these things, the level 1 games will teach them how to use the mouse and keyboard well. Level 2 has a spelling game, which is very good for children who know their letters. They will also develop better mouse skills and keyboard knowledge with faster, timed games. The games are long enough to build skills and short enough to hold a small child’s attention. Unfortunately, you can only choose level 1 or 2 when you first log in, so if your child is at level 1 in some games but level 2 in others they will have to restart the system to change levels. Fortunately, the purchased games do allow you to choose level 1 or 2 without restarting. If your child knows letters, numbers and colors the games on the system will not be too helpful from an educational point of view (other than the spelling game and the inbox which teaches some facts about animals). You may have to buy some games with the system or soon after buying it to keep their attention. However, if your child is still learning these things the games on the system should keep them busy for a while. I have two complaints. First, there is the lack of games but clickstart is fairly new to the market, so hopefully more will be added soon. Second, the games only come with two levels, so its possible that many children might outgrow the games quickly. A third level would have extended their usefulness longer. At $19.99 the longer the games can be used the better.

Multiple modes of play - Single Game, Season Play, Batting Practice and Home Run Derby Full stats and standings in Season Play

Customer Review: The Best Backyard Sports Game Ever
This game is awesome. I never would play any backyard sport game if I had to choose one. I have thrown a perfect game[ very hard to try], game winning hits, clutch peformances by unsung players. This game is the best.
    Customer Review: Son likes it
My 7 year old son loves it, but my pet peeve is that there is no way to Save a game & come back to it. Therefore I have to allot him a good hour to play, so he can only use it on the weekend! I contacted the company, & they said that is how the game is set up.

    Math 2
Based on the School Zone workbook series, this program teaches critical math skills with interactive activities and fun games. Proven curriculum, audio guidance, and clear examples help your child master addition, subtraction, multiplication, place values, and other skills. The program randomizes problems with each use, providing endless activities. The engaging games provide a helpful break.
    List Price: $9.99
    Amazon Price: $9.99
    Used Price: $9.75
Customer Review: Definitely worth the money
Math Grade 2 (Schoolzone) This game provides 200 problems in 30 sets that concentrate on addition and subtraction. The first sets reinforce the meaning of and relationship between addition and subtraction. Next come the facts. Then, after a couple of sets covering place value, comes application of addition and subtraction algorithms up to three-digit problems with carry/borrow. The final sets touch on multiplication: its meaning, relationship to addition, and a few facts (2x and 3x only). Games are provided between problem sets to help maintain interest. I was pleased to see that some minimum number of problems must be solved before a game appears, so the little scholar must work first to play later. The program remembers what problems have been solved, so exiting the program doesn’t mean having to start again from the very beginning. With only 200 problems, this program won’t keep your kid occupied very long (my 6 year-old took three weeks to finish). It’s possible to start over with new problems in the same format, but that would be boring. Other than its limited scope (which is OK, given the low price), the only drawback is that your child won’t exactly be bugging you to get off the computer so she can do math. Games aside, this program is basically an electronic workbook, not an arcade game. That’s OK too - you’re buying education, not entertainment. NOTE: The Amazon listing states that Windows 95 or 98 is required. This is way out of date. The disk we got was labelled as XP-compatible, and ran just fine on our XP machine. Maura’s Review Math 2 is a great program. It helps me with math. Math 2 is amazing! I have never seen anything like it. So whatever you do something with math…get Math 2!** ** Translation: this program is very pretty when seen in the rear-view mirror.
Customer Review: My son loves this!
My son loves math so I was looking for a program that he might enjoy. He plays it often and I usually have to drag him from the computer!

Customer Review: While I don’t regret watching it, I can’t recommend it
I’d say the movie was about as good as the book - which is basically fluff. The characters lacked depth, and the story was weak at best. I don’t regret watching it, but I would also never want to see it again. If you have anything else to do, you’re better off doing it instead of spending the time with this movie.
Customer Review: The lying devil of old
The wretchedly written and grammatically incorrect sentences in the excerpts I glimpsed from Dan Brown’s “The DaVinci Code” were more than enough to discourage me from reading his controversial best-seller, but I was curious enough about the uproar to watch Ron Howard’s film version on DVD.

Is it really as blasphemous as critics charge?

    Oh my, is it ever.

If fans of Brown’s fiction were to bother reading the Bible, they might see how this preposterous attempt to disprove the divinity of Jesus Christ is just one more example of end-times prophecy being fulfilled. The mockers and blasphemers are coming forward in great numbers, just as Jesus said they would, determined to recast the Son of God in deceptive New Age terms or to dismiss Him all-together. In doing so, they are paving the way for the Antichrist who will deceive the whole world into accepting him as the Messiah.

The big bad beast does not make an appearance in Howard’s film, but his coming is alluded to in the climax. The figure whom, it is suggested, is the only one worthy to possess the Holy Grail could be no one else. It certainly isn’t the real Christ because the pursuit of some so-called Holy Grail is pure idolatry as warned against by God. Placing mystical value on any object, be it the chalice that Jesus sipped from during the Last Supper, or the spear that pierced His side during the crucifixion, or the Shroud of Turin, is Satanic in origin, emphasizing that which has been created rather than the Creator himself.

As for DaVinci, it is well-known that he was a member of several secret societies, the likes of which still flourish today, to carry out the devil’s plan to blind our eyes to the truth. Any “codes” in his work are in service to that lying devil of old and reveal nothing but his own corruption.

On a purely cinematic level, “The DaVinci Code” is still a bust. This is third-rate Indiana Jones stuff, poorly made and indifferently acted. With the kinks in his hair ironed out, Tom Hanks looks like…well, I’ll leave it to you to choose the private anatomical part he most resembles. The two-time Oscar winner’s seemingly invulnerable career hit a bump in the road around the time of “The Terminal.” His presence in a film based on a cheap pop culture phenomenon may have temporarily stalled his decline, but in the long run it may only accelerate it. Ian McKellon is so obnoxious here that I wanted to slap him.

As for Ron Howard, he probably should have stayed in Mayberry. He wouldn’t have gone on to a directing career or an Oscar, but as the Bible asks, “What doth it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?”

Let your cares from the day just melt away as you chill-out to this super-sensual set of European favorites compiled by the Gordon Brothers (Cafe de Luna / World Groove Mix). Dim the lights and let the mood take you there
Customer Review: What electronica should sound like
I really like dance electronica. That said, there’s only so much of it that’s different. This compilation is the best of the stuff that makes me move and relax, at the same time. I never get tired of this series. Same goes for every one of the Buddha-Lounge albums by Sequoia Records.
Customer Review: Lovely mix of world beat and electronica
This album is a mixture of world beat including asian, indian and middle eastern rhythms and melodies, with an electronica feel. It is in the same vein, but softer than Dum Dum Project’s mix of indian chants. I highly recommend it for meditation or yoga, but also just to relax while studying for a test or having to deal with any stressor. It is not sticky sweet, or cloyingly annoy as something like Enya (not all songs, but some) can be…You won’t go use this for aerobics or running, so if you are looking for more up beat electronica with world sounds you should try the new Reboot- Music for the next generation from Om Records. Benefits from both CDs also go to charity, so that’s bonus. For what this music is intended, i.e. lounge type chill with a world beat influence, it does an excellent job, and I highly recommend it.

Normally we don’t use our blog to say things like “save big!” but we on the high-def team are kind of excited to have our first ever Gold Box Deal of the Day for a Blu-ray title: Lost–The Complete Third Season. According the product description for this set, the “lines between good and evil are blurred,” but fortunately, with high definition, the picture won’t be. We have plenty more jokes in this vein but we will spare you, as quantities are limited we’re sure some of you are eager to pick up Dr. Jack Shephard–59% off. –Leah, Movies & TV Editor

Singer-songwriter Cass McCombs has been something of an opening act du jour lately warming the stage for the Shins, Andrew Bird, Jose Gonzalez, and currently for Band of Horses. Late last year, McCombs released his fourth full-length, Dropping the Writ, to quiet critical acclaim and heavy rotation around our office–focused mostly in the area right around my desk. It was my Significant 7 editor-recommendation for January, made our Best of 2007 list, and was easily one of my favorite records of the year. We were lucky to catch Cass during his busy BoH tour schedule and put the following questions to him.

    ~Gabi

Amazon.com: Each of your albums has a distinct tone and outlook but overall the music always seems really consistent and cohesive. I’m wondering if you use the same band each time or if you use a band at all?

Cass McCombs: i am fortunate to have wonderful friends who help me, because honestly i have no clue about recording. all credit is due to the musicians and engineers, it is their breath that gives life to the music. also, i must credit the long friendships i’ve had for providing me with the inspiration behind the music. all songs are developed out of these relationships, through ongoing conversations…

Amazon.com: Dropping the Writ sounds a lot more dynamic and studio-recorded than your other albums. What was different this time? Did you have more resources or more time to figure out arrangements?

Cass McCombs: every recording is a brand new situation. with this, we had more time to fool around and get lost and try to find a way out. but it could have ended a million different ways. it was not magic. we were lucky to have a studio at our disposal and the ability to work at home, too. it was hot and summertime and i couldn’t sleep anyway.

Amazon.com: You’re taking a lot of risks on this new album and you seem really unselfconscious about what you’re doing. What informed the mood of Dropping the Writ?

Cass McCombs: i don’t know… to me, i am very self-conscious, always batting my own hand, “stop”. it seems the more weight is put on the expression of a feeling, the more distant it becomes. people can only judge the expression, they simply cannot take one’s word for it. so the music is here for you all to judge, but i will still hold on to the feeling for myself.

Amazon.com: As a singer you’re much more daring and expressive on this album. Are you approaching singing differently now?

Cass McCombs: i’m learning how to sing through singing. as kids, were taught that when we speak indoors or at the dinner table to use our “inside voice”. singing is the “outside voice”… Continue …

What Does This Commercial Say to You?

    January 29, 2008 | By Doug In shopping | Comments(0)

First of all, thanks to Popwatcher Michael Slezak for posting this Kraft Singles commercial today. Like him, I would like to know what the message in this commercial is. All pregnant women should subsist on Kraft Singles? Pregnant women love cheese? Kraft Singles will help you have a super-cute baby? If the last is true, I have to wonder how much cuter my already super-cute baby would have been, had I eaten Kraft Singles every day of my pregnancy (or at all, for that matter).

Al Dente readers, what’s your take on this commercial?

There are a number of film titles that I store in the My Movies section of IMDB that have inexplicably not been published on DVD, and I use the list to periodically check to see if they’ve finally surfaced. And it looks like I’ve got an inkling of hope of marking some titles off of my list, thanks to movie studios looking to the long tail to counter falling DVD sales. This week, Sony (which owns such studios as Columbia, Tri-Star, and Screen Gems) announced that it would license older DVD titles not currently released for production and distribution through HP’s manufactured-on-demand service. As Studio Briefing notes:

The deal will allow consumers to order movies that ordinarily would not be stocked by dealers because they are too obscure or too old. HP indicated that it expects to sign similar deals with other studios. “We’re hoping this provides another option to make available products that wouldn’t necessarily garner widespread retail shelf space,” Jason Spivak, head of strategic development at Sony Home Entertainment, told the Times. Added Doug Warner, head of HP’s digital content business, “If studios can sell more catalog than previously, they can generate more money.”

Sadly, this won’t help me with the lost movie that’s at the top of my list–The Big Fix, which starred Richard Dreyfuss as a 1970s gumshoe–as Universal Studios owns that property (and it’s been frustratingly available only on VHS for years… c’mon, it’s Richard Dreyfuss!). But if this venture is successful, hopefully we’ll see other studios move to production-on-demand.

In other optical disc news, it seems that Warner Bros. announcement that it was moving exclusively to the Blu-ray high-definition disc format is pretty much killing off the HD DVD format. Noting sales for the week after the announcement just before CES, Electronista writes that Home Media Magazine found that “83 percent of movie sales were for Blu-ray versions of movies, leaving the remaining 17 percent to HD DVD.”

Hillary Clinton, Mike Huckabee Tapped For MTV/MySpace’s ‘Closing Arguments’
when 24 states hold their presidential-nomination primaries or caucuses, MTV and MySpace will host some of the front-running Democratic and Republican candidates in a ‘Super’ edition of the ongoing MTV/MySpace Presidential Dialogue series. At 6 p.m. ET

    Razor A Kick Scooter
The original kick scooter, the Razor A is a handy little ride for kids and teens alike. Though it’ll never replace the internal combustion engine, the scooter will get your child from point A to point B much quicker than on foot alone, and requires just a few scoots of one’s shoes in the process. Plus, it’s a blast to use, as your progeny will likely attest.

The Razor A is built of aircraft-grade aluminum, a sturdy material that holds up to use and abuse through the years. Its T-tube and deck, meanwhile, fold up into a compact footprint, so riders can fit the scooter inside a bag or carry it at their side when riding isn’t appropriate (it weighs around 6 pounds). And thanks to the 98mm inline-style urethane wheels, ABEC 5 bearings, and patented rear fender brake, riders will always feel smooth and in control when kicking along the sidewalk.

Recommended for ages 5 and older, the Razor A will support a rider up to 143 pounds. It’s also backed by a six-month warranty. For the next step up, try the Razor A2 Scooter.

When you’re done riding, the Razor A folds down to a nicely compact size.

    Specifications:

    • Scooter material: Aircraft-grade aluminum tube and deck
    • Wheel size: 98mm
    • Wheel bearings: ABEC-5
    • Brakes: Rear fender
    • Allen wrench: 5mm (not included)
    • Handlebar height: 33 inches (wheel to handlebar)
    • Weight: 6 pounds
    • Maximum rider weight: 143 pounds
    • Suspension: No
    • Wheelie bar: No
    • Kickstand: No
    • Folded dimensions: 23.75 x 4 x 7.25 inches

The buyer and rider of the Razor A scooter are responsible for knowing and obeying all local, state, and federal regulations regarding the riding and use of scooters.

    Customer Review: Nice Ride
I ordered this skooter for my 7yr old Grandson, who needs it for physical therapy (improving his balance). I liked that the skooter comes fully assembled (quite novel these days). I was told that Razor builds a well constructed product, and I found that to be the case. The only complaint is a minor one. The adjustment lever for raising/lowering the height of the handles is too tight for a small child to operate. Perhaps it will loosen up with time. As will all my Amazon purchases, I was happy with the entire transaction, especially delivery.
    Customer Review: Perfect!!
I was stunned when my son told me he wanted the original scooter and not one of the upgraded, more expensive ones. (Hallelujah) Apparently, this the one all the other kids he knows has. The reason is, and this is IMPORTANT- the newer ones have some kind of bar/guard on the back, that in theory, is a good idea, but according to my son, gets in the way, and inhibits breaking (stopping). Cheaper AND safer- it has my vote!!

    Mossimo? Solid Polo
    Customer Review: Quality polo
I was anxious on getting my first Mossimo polo jersey. I am glad i made the choice in buying this product because it was worth every penny. This polo surpassed my expectations. When i saw it for the first time wrapped meticulously in plastic, the colour of the jersey was rich, the touch of the fabric was soft and the smell was unbelievable. I eagerly wripped off the plastic and the tag and had to wear it on for a party later that night. It felt like a true polo pressed against my skin. The logo is even more surreal of a roaring lion. I fell in love with this brand and had to buy 2 more Mossimo polo jerseys to put in my closet. I highly recommednd it to any customer looking for a quality polo.

Customer Review: JBL is the “BOMB”
JBL CREATURE 2 TOTALLY RULEZ I recieved this speakers in a timely manner and fell………totally in love with these beautiful and great sounding speakers. I have a iMac 24″ Desktop and these look like they were made for it . I am not a huge fan of “white” electronics but after I purchased my iMac I couldn’t help but to think they did something right here , now I need to accessorize my Mac, and JBL is doing that beautifully. WholeSaleAV sent the speakers quickly and look forward to future purchases through this retailer.
Customer Review: WTF?? there is NO volume adjustment!!
i dunno y every one is rating these things so high. my integrated lap top speakers are literally LOUDER then these speakers. o wow, this deal comes with a sub woofer….big deal! im like sooo serious, this is retarded. they are so quiet its not even funny. my dad has the Logitech Z-4 and they work great. i say cough up the extra money and go for some speakers that actually have some sort of amplifier.

Customer Review: Great! Feels like I just left the dentist.
I love my Sonicare e7300. Everytime I use it, my mouth feels like I just left the dentist (minus the pain and lectures on tooth decay). Battery life is about a week per charge, and takes 12-14 hours to recharge fully.
    Customer Review: Does the job
I purchased the Sonicare Elite for my daughter who, at the time, was having periodontal problems. She loves the Elite and although she did eventually have gum surgery, her periodontal problems actually improved prior to the surgery.

Remember when snow days meant snowball fights, building forts, and a day off from school? Now, they just mean having to shovel the driveway and walkway. Lucky for us, the Toro 1800 Power Curve snow thrower can make that job a lot less arduous and time-consuming. Powered by a 12 amp electric motor, the Power Curve can clear 4 inches of snow off a 50-by-20-foot driveway in 10 minutes flat. The thrower cuts to a depth of 10 inches and width of 18 inches per pass. A patented two-blade curved rotor scrapes the snow all the way to the pavement and throws it up to 30 feet. The chute rotates 160 degrees, too, for better snow control. Best of all, the Power Curve is lightweight, compact, and maneuverable. Startups are easy. Just squeeze the trigger on the control bar, then release it when you want to stop. A key lock helps prevent unauthorized use, so you don’t have to worry about kids, or even the neighbor borrowing it without permission. With the Power Curve, snow removal is quick and easy, so you can spend your time on more important things, like having snowball fights. –Carl Thress

Customer Review: Great product for the price!!
We live in cold Wisconsin, and usually takes about 45 mins to shovel. My husband used it for the first time today and we timed it. {11 mins.} Could not believe it. I am now looking forward to the next snow fall, so I can check it out mtself. You won’t be disappointed.
    Customer Review: blowing snow
This snow thrower arrived in only a few days, the free shipping cemented the deal for me. It has plenty of power on our walks and driveway, just need to get to it before it piles up and freezes solid. It’s made it a pleasure to be out there NOT shoveling. The noise level is pretty good.

Amid uncertainty and rising panic, Lindsay juggles the possibility of a new love with an unsolvable investigation, and the knowledge that one member of the club could be on the brink of death. And just when everything appears momentarily under control, the case takes a terrifying turn, putting an entire city in lethal danger. Customer Review: You’re slipping, James!
Love James Patterson. Love the fact that he writes so much; I don’t have to wait 2 years for his novels to be published but between Step on a Crack and this one, the quality has taken a noticeable turn downward. This book did not engage me at all. I really had to fight to finish it. The crimes were just kind of thrown together and neither one resonated with me. One of the aspects that makes the Woman’s Murder Club a good series is the character’s personal lives. Their lives were glossed over in this one. Boxer’s relationship angle with Joe doesn’t seem to work. Just a disappointing effort overall. Maybe a little more quality and a little less quantity, James?
    Customer Review: Very Good
I did enjoy this book very much and was also able to introduce my husband to the source for the new TV series, which I am enjoying, also.

    Customer Review: another great hit!!
They’ve done it again! This is another wonderful expansion pack with lots of great new items, careers and fun things to discover! The only negative thing I have to say is that it can get annoyig trying to see your character through the snow or rain.
    Customer Review: I love it
Just got it this week. It was fun building the green house and trying to grow the tomato plants. You have to dress accordingly to the weather and only plant your crops at the right times. Definitely think its fun and adds to the overall game experience.
