  • What We Talk About When We Talk About Manganese

    February 20, 2008 | By Doug In shopping | Comments(0)

Let me begin by pointing out that the word “Manganese” is not a reference to the indigenous people of the country of Manga. There is no country of  Manga. And if there were, it is widely believed that the indigenous people would want to be referred to as Mangaonians.  And while Manga is not a country, it is the Japanese word for comics or print cartoons, and while Amazon.com has hundreds of titles related to the art of Manga, none of these facts are among the reasons for bringing up Manga or Manganese here.

The reason I bring up Manganese is that it is one of the most common alloying elements that help differentiate a carbon steel from an alloyed steel.  How do I know this?  I watched the 2nd posting from our friends at Tooling U called Metal Classifications 150.  Here they cover the various metal grades and applications for each.   This session is helpful if you’re fabricating, grinding, finishing or machining carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel or non-ferrous metals.

Melitta MEMB1 Mill & Brew Coffeemaker

    February 18, 2008 | By Doug In Target | Comments(0)

Melitta MEMB1 Mill & Brew Coffeemaker
Customer Review: Very good coffee maker
I did a lot of research prior to this purchase. I currently work for Gevalia and my father is a big coffee drinker, so I wanted to make sure to get a grinder/brewer that he would enjoy. This unit is very sleek and professional looking. The cups we’ve had have been very good and the Melitta name is well respected. We’ve had this coffee maker for probably close to two years now and haven’t had any problems. Two knocks on it that I guess I could give is that like most coffee makers, the area to pour the water is kind of in a strange location in the back and a tad hard to pour into. The other thing is, also like most coffee makers, that measuring the right amount of beans/grinds to use to make cups can remind you that you are a chemist. My dad had to make a little chart to remind him exactly how many scoops make what type cups.
    Customer Review: Not hot
Want to reiterate that the coffee maker does not keep coffee hot. I must always put in the microwave. Also, reminder that you only put enough beans in the grider for 1 carafe — unlike others that store beans and grind what it needs.

Customer Review: Simply the best MP3 player yet
First of all, I bet anyone reading this is considering an iPod. Well I have owned 4 iPods. I can tell you none of them were as wonderful as my Zune 80 GB. The only iPod that is even remotely close to this is the iPod classic 80 and 160, and in both cases the Zune has a far better screen. The iPod touch has a rather nice screen but it’s more expensive and has a limited 16 GBs of storage, just a mere 20% of the capacity of the Zune80. And there is one more thing… With Zune you have a choice to subscribe to all the music you want for a small monthly fee, which means you can download ANYTHING from the Zune Marketplace and actually use this storage to explore and discover new music without going broke. But if you are one of those people who must own every song, then you can choose to buy them one by one or album by albun same as you do with iTunes. So with Zune, you have a choice. With iPod you don’t have a choice. So bigger screen, more storage, and choices. It’s a winner! Alex Alexzander
Customer Review: Love the Hardware, Hate the Software
I really can’t understand why I can’t sync this machine directly from WMP11. The Zune Desktop is just plain hideous. Had I known how truly awful it was going to be I wouldn’t have bought the player. It’s slow. It’s buggy: if you edit MP3 tags, the program actually reverts them to the wrong characteristics if it doesn’t agree with what it thinks the tag should be! The Zune desktop is clearly aimed at morons who want to just plug the thing in without actually maintaining their collections. It might be OK for a 4GB flash-toy, but I got 60 GB of WMA’s on this player and editing, deleting, moving, renaming or doing anything sensible is out of the question with this software. In a word, it’s ****. Hardware: sounds great, the interface is clean, battery life is excellent. I’d give the hardware 5 stars. Now let’s get a sync feature that works with WMP or some third party app so I can actually use it.

    Customer Review: Great Product!
I was worried that this would be too advanced for my daughter - she is almost three - but she loves it and totally gets how to use the pen and the directional arrows. We bought the Dora Wildlife Rescue game and I can already tell that she is recognizing letters and numbers a lot better than before. There are still a lot more challenges that she can work toward, so I can see her using this for a long time to come. We have not even tried to attach it to the TV…it seemed like a good feature to have, but I’m not sure how much we will use it (we’ve only had it one month). If I were to make the purchase again, I would probably just go for the hand held game unit. Also, the preloaded games are really limited and did not hold her attention for very long. It is worth it to invest in a good game.
Customer Review: i really want another one!
we love the leapster at our house! my 3.5 and 5.5 year old squabble over it often, that’s why i’d love to have another one! the batteries seem to need replacing often, but honestly, my kids play it a lot, it’s expected. the screen has held up well, my only gripe is with the stylus. i think our cat has been chewing on the connection point to the unit, so that’s our own problem, but i wish the styluses on all leapfrog products were easier/cheaper to swap out (this is also a gripe on our leappad bus!). the games is the other gripe, l-max games are about $30 per game. regular leapster games are about $24 per game but the l-max can run any leapster games (not just l-max). i haven’t tried any games that are not l-max though, so i’m not sure how graphics, etc would be. we’re very happy with this purchase, if i could find another one as cheap as i found our current one, i’d buy it for my 3 year old. he’s learning A LOT thanks to leapster!

Trick Knee Gets a Diagnosis, and New Victims

Our sweepstakes for Char-Broil’s Big Easy Oil-less Infrared Turkey Fryer has stirred up a lot of questions in the comments, so we’ve gone out and gotten you some answers. BBQ expert “CB” of Sizzle on the Grill—Char-Broil is a sponsor—dropped us a line with more information about this unique product for cooking a turkey: Q: How do you “fry” without oil? And how is infrared different from microwave and convection?
A: There are three basic methods for heating food—convection, conduction, and radiation. Convection is the act of air heating and rising and circulating around the chamber. A home oven is a perfect example of this. Every home oven is a “convection” oven, but if you add a fan to it you actively circulate the air and essentially speed up the natural process. For backyard BBQs the smoker or grill also uses convection to “roast” meat inside when the lid is closed.

Conduction is the direct transfer of heat from the heat source to the food to be cooked. A frying pan is a perfect example of this.

Radiation is the transfer of electromagnetic waves through the space. Your home microwave uses radiation. Microwaves and infrared waves are at different spots on the spectrum of energy. Microwaves hit food and “excite” water molecules. Infrared hits the food and that starts the heating process.

Now let me blow your mind. Deep frying is a form of convection heating. Instead of hot air, you are using hot oil to transfer the heat. Depending on the oil used in the fryer, the temperature is usually about 375 degrees to keep the food from absorbing a lot of oil.

The Big Easy uses infrared energy to “bathe” food. It excites the proteins, not the water. Thus, you are literally frying it. It’s just like sitting in the sun all day. The infrared energy will “fry” your meat’s skin. The Big Easy doesn’t need a lid because it’s better to let the hot air escape. That way your food doesn’t dry out and there’s no basting necessary. Unlike conventional turkey fryers there is also no warm-up period. Just drop your thawed turkey (stuffed or unstuffed, injected or not, sugar-less rubbed or not) into the chamber and turn the Big Easy on. Infrared energy starts cooking it immediately and the cooking time for 12-14-pound turkey will be cut almost in half.

Q: Is the Big Easy hard to clean?
A: The Big Easy has a drain hole at the bottom to allow most of the drippings to collect in tray. If you line that tray with a food-safe liner, you can reuse the drippings for gravy. Any small amounts of fat and drippings that splatter on the sides of the chamber burn off almost immediately. Otherwise, they clean up easily with a scrub brush and soapy water. The wire cooking basket can be cleaned the same way or put in the dishwasher.

Thanks for the info “CB!” Readers, it’s your duty to sign up to win this fryer.

Banana Republic will face stiff competition in Britain

Customer Review: The movie that launched a romance…
Putting aside the whole Brangelina affair, this film was quite entertaining. Essentially a buddy movie, Smith has something for everyone; romance, explosions and comedy. The Good - the chemistry between Brad and Angelina, The Bad - none to speak of, The Ugly - knowing that all that chemistry actually helped to end a relationship! (Poor Jennifer…)
Customer Review: ****Yawn**** They could’ve done *so* much better.
I must admit though: -Interesting the first and second watch through -Grows stale by the third and fourth -Hot celebrity couple -Lots of tension -Chaos -Intriguing premise -Not worth the bother -Don’t even rent it unless You’re obsessed with this pair -Spend the money on a pizza instead -Very bland and average-feeling 2.5 stars.

This is a very good product. One or two of the recording are hard to hear because of the technology of the day. It would be better if the recordings were in date order. All of their cases should be on CD or DVD. The references to war bonds or other war announcements at the end of many recordings is fascinating. I can imagine my parents and grandparents listening to these on the radio. I wish someone would put radio plays on the radio while you’re stuck in rush hour. I bet it would sell. Ron Kinzer

Garmin GSC 10 Speed Cadence Sensor for Edge and Forerunner Series (010-10644-00)

Garmin GSC 10 Speed Cadence Sensor for Edge and Forerunner Series (010-10644-00)
Monitor your pedaling cadence as you ride with this self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor. It measures and reports your pedaling strokes per minute, providing feedback for optimal performance.
    List Price: $59.99
Amazon Price: Too low to display
Customer Review: Garmin 301 Edge Cadence unit
Great! Love the automatic wheel sizing capability. The packaging doesn’t separated the magnets, so they tend to get stuck together and you think one of them (the wheel unit) is missing, but is it there…a necessary addition to your Garmin Edge if you ride places where tunnels will be part of the scene (Blue Ridge Parkway).
Customer Review: Excellent compact lightweight wireless cadence sensor
Another handy piece of equipment from Garmin! This kit comes in three basic parts; a sensor unit, which is about the size of a matchbox, and two magnets about the size of your pinky nail. Several zip-ties are included for mounting purposes; the entire kit weighs at most a couple of ounces. Installation is pretty straightforward, but do follow the directions carefully and don’t snug down the zip-ties until you’re sure you’ve got all three components just where you want them and have tested the system! The sensor mounts to the left chain stay with a pair of zip-ties. Garmin thoughtfully added a piece of rubber padding to the bottom of the sensor unit, so it won’t rough up your fancy carbon frame or your paint job :) A single zip-tie attaches the crank magnet to the crank, although I had to use a large (3/4″) shim on my FSA crank (which has a curved profile and a hollow back) to place the crank magnet in the proper position for the sensor to “see” it. The spoke magnet clamp has both a round hole and a square hole; make sure you use the right hole for your spoke profile! I mounted mine on a spoke directly opposite the tire valve, just to help keep the wheel in balance. The sensor unit must be positioned along the chain stay such that it can “see” both the crank magnet as it passes by the cadence sensor (the round part on the side of the sensor unit), and the spoke magnet as it passes the speed sensor (the part that looks like a lever in the picture). Testing is accomplished by pressing a small button on the sensor unit, which prompts it to flash a red LED, then a green one to indicate that testing is started. As pointed out by another reviewer, the LEDs are hard to see in bright ambient light; I’d recommend testing in a garage if possible. Hi-intensity LEDs would have solved this problem, although I suspect these LEDs were chosen for their low power consumption, so maybe it’s a smart design decision after all. Once the test button is pressed, the next 60 revolutions of the crank should cause the red LED to flash when the crank magnet passes the sensor, while the spoke magnet passing the sensor should generate a green LED flash. If you saw the red/green flash when the button was pressed, but don’t see a flash as each magnet passes the sensor, chances are one or both magnets are not properly aligned with the sensor (there are alignment lines on the sensor and both magnets), or the magnets are passing too far from the sensor (this is the problem I encountered and solved with a shim). When you’re sure everything is in the right places, snug the zip-ties and cut them flush. Then set up a screen (typically the Biking screen) on your 305 to display Cadence in one of the data fields, and go ride!

Apples to Apples is the wild, award-winning card and party game that provides instant fun for four to ten players! It’s as easy as “comparing apples to apples”…just open the box, deal the cards, and you’re ready to play! Select the card from your hand that you think is best described by a card played by the judge. If the judge picks your card, you win that round. And everyone gets a chance to be the judge! Each round is filled with surprising and outrageous comparisons from a wide range of people, places, things and events. Fast moving and refreshing, Apples to Apples is perfect for any get-together with family and friends!

    Amazon Price: $21.49
    Customer Review: Alot of fun
I bought it for a family gathering and every one enjoyed it, even those that don’t enjoy games as much. The ad I heard was true about “learning to play in a couple minutes”. Very easy and quick to learn how to play and start a game. Another plus is people can drop out and join in at any time. The only frustrating thing I found is that as the judgeing rotates you are at the mercy of questionable judgement. The more competitive you are, probably the more it would bother someone. There are times it is clear to most everyone that your card is the best match but the judge chooses another one. Overall a very worth while purchase.
Customer Review: Great Fun at Parties or With the Family!
This is a fun game to play for almost any age. It’s great at parties, with a group of friends, or just as an ice breaker. Probably the best thing about it is how much knowing a person can help. It is extra fun and fulfilling to get your card chosen because you know the dealer and can guess what would be most appropriate for them. Apples to Apples is very similar to another game called The Perfect Present. That game plays very similarly, but instead of choosing appropriate words, players choose “gifts” that the dealer might want instead. This also turns out to be extremely fun because you can offer cool gifts such as super powers or world peace, instead of just guessing what word the dealer finds most appropriate. I would highly recommend either one of these games for children or adults that are looking for a fun game to play with friends or people they just met.
