Customer Review: Anne Rice
Unfortunately I was under the impression that this was a new DVD of Anne Rice’s writing/work. It was released in 2006; however this is a video that was actually released in 2000. The advertisement was misleading in my opinion. Be careful. If you are looking for a DVD that showcases current opinions and writings of Anne Rice this is not the DVD for you.

Customer Review: While I don’t regret watching it, I can’t recommend it
I’d say the movie was about as good as the book - which is basically fluff. The characters lacked depth, and the story was weak at best. I don’t regret watching it, but I would also never want to see it again. If you have anything else to do, you’re better off doing it instead of spending the time with this movie.

Customer Review: The lying devil of old
The wretchedly written and grammatically incorrect sentences in the excerpts I glimpsed from Dan Brown’s “The DaVinci Code” were more than enough to discourage me from reading his controversial best-seller, but I was curious enough about the uproar to watch Ron Howard’s film version on DVD.

Is it really as blasphemous as critics charge?

Oh my, is it ever.

If fans of Brown’s fiction were to bother reading the Bible, they might see how this preposterous attempt to disprove the divinity of Jesus Christ is just one more example of end-times prophecy being fulfilled. The mockers and blasphemers are coming forward in great numbers, just as Jesus said they would, determined to recast the Son of God in deceptive New Age terms or to dismiss Him all-together. In doing so, they are paving the way for the Antichrist who will deceive the whole world into accepting him as the Messiah.

The big bad beast does not make an appearance in Howard’s film, but his coming is alluded to in the climax. The figure whom, it is suggested, is the only one worthy to possess the Holy Grail could be no one else. It certainly isn’t the real Christ because the pursuit of some so-called Holy Grail is pure idolatry as warned against by God. Placing mystical value on any object, be it the chalice that Jesus sipped from during the Last Supper, or the spear that pierced His side during the crucifixion, or the Shroud of Turin, is Satanic in origin, emphasizing that which has been created rather than the Creator himself.

As for DaVinci, it is well-known that he was a member of several secret societies, the likes of which still flourish today, to carry out the devil’s plan to blind our eyes to the truth. Any “codes” in his work are in service to that lying devil of old and reveal nothing but his own corruption.

On a purely cinematic level, “The DaVinci Code” is still a bust. This is third-rate Indiana Jones stuff, poorly made and indifferently acted. With the kinks in his hair ironed out, Tom Hanks looks like…well, I’ll leave it to you to choose the private anatomical part he most resembles. The two-time Oscar winner’s seemingly invulnerable career hit a bump in the road around the time of “The Terminal.” His presence in a film based on a cheap pop culture phenomenon may have temporarily stalled his decline, but in the long run it may only accelerate it. Ian McKellon is so obnoxious here that I wanted to slap him.

As for Ron Howard, he probably should have stayed in Mayberry. He wouldn’t have gone on to a directing career or an Oscar, but as the Bible asks, “What doth it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?”

Easter Eats: Smith Island 10-Layer Cake

The Smith Island Cake, a Maryland tradition, is poised to become the state’s official dessert. True, this isn’t a standard Easter recipe, but I guarantee that if you show up for Easter festivities with a chocolate-drenched 10-layer cake, you won’t be turned away. You could try bringing bibbibabka, the official dessert of Mypos, but someone might get hurt. This recipe is courtesy of NPR.org.

Smith Island 10-Layer Cake

Ingredients (Frosting):
2 sticks butter
2 12-oz. cans evaporated milk
8 heaping tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
2 lbs. confectioners sugar

Directions (Frosting):
1. Melt butter. Stir in evaporated milk (off heat).
2. Whisk in cocoa until smooth, return to heat and cook for approximately 10 minutes. DO NOT BOIL or scorch.
3. Remove from heat and whisk in confectioners sugar slowly.
4. Cook slowly until thickened and will stick to back of a spoon or to the whisk. (It will form a ribbon when you drizzle a spoonful onto mixture while cooking.)

Approx time: 45 minutes.

Ingredients (Cake):
2 cups sugar
2 sticks unsalted butter, cut into chunks
5 eggs
3 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
1 cup evaporated milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cup water

Directions (Cake):
1. Cream together sugar and butter.
2. Add eggs one at a time and beat until smooth.
3. Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Mix into egg mixture one cup at a time.
4. With mixer running, slowly pour in the evaporated milk, then the vanilla and water. Mix just until uniform.
5. Put three serving spoonfuls of batter in each of 10 9-inch lightly greased pans, using the back of the spoon to spread evenly.
6. Bake three layers at a time on the middle rack of the oven at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. A layer is done when you hold it near your ear and you don’t hear it sizzle.
7. Start making the icing when the first layer goes in the oven. Let the layers cool a couple of minutes in the pans.
8. Put the cake together as the layers are finished.
9. Run a spatula around the edge oft the pan and ease the layer out of the pan. Don’t worry if it tears; no one will notice when the cake is finished.
10. Use two or three serving spoonfuls of icing between each layer. Cover the top and sides of the cake with the rest of the icing. Push icing that runs onto the plate back onto the cake.

To Ice the Cake:
Take one slightly cooled layer and spread with cooled frosting. Add crushed candy randomly on layer. (Reese’s cups, Snickers, Milky Ways or whatever your favorite is — candy is optional as well.) Add next layers, frosting, candy and repeat process till the 10th layer. Do not add candy to final layer. Finish frosting the cake and sides. You may have to wait to ice the top and sides until the icing cools.

Spinmaster Air Hogs Havoc Heli (Colors May Vary)

Spinmaster Air Hogs Havoc Heli (Colors May Vary)

With the world’s record for the smallest remote-controlled helicopter, the Air Hogs Havoc Heli goes where no other flying object can. Recommended for ages eight and up, this incredible little R/C heli from Spinmaster is easy and fun for kids of all ages — even grown up ones.

Realistic Helicopter Fun
The Havoc Heli has twin rotors for stability and four-way control for flying in any direction with accuracy — up, down, under, over, left, right, forward and backward. Like a real helicopter, the Havoc can hover in one spot. It even manuevers through the toughest of obstacles. Intended for indoor use, the helicopter operates outdoors with zero wind conditions, and can fly up to 100 feet high in the air. The Havoc Heli is also equipped with a flashing blue LED light for night flying.

Friendly competition
Not just for flying solo, the Havoc Heli is designed for fun with your friends. With three selectable frequencies, up to three Air Hogs helicopters can fly in the same room at the same time. Beyond flying for fun, the hook attachment on the bottom of the helicopter picks up objects for top secret racing missions — with or againsts friends.

Tough, Tiny, And Ready To Fly
Measuring six inches long and weighing only ten grams, the Havoc fits in the palm of a hand. Extraordinarily lightweight, the helicopter is built for crash resistance with a flexible, high-impact EPP foam body. The internal battery offers twice the amount of flight time as other R/C helicopters. The remote control charges the rechargeable LIPO battery in 15 minutes, providing six minutes of flight time. The remote requires 6 “AA” batteries (not included). Available in yellow, blue, and red, the Havoc Heli comes completely assembled and ready to fly.

What’s in the Box
Remote-Controlled helicopter and remote control.

Extraordinarily lightweight, the helicopter is built for crash resistance and manuverability, and fits in the palm of your hand.

An internal battery offers twice the amount of flight time as other R/C helicopters, while the remote control charges the rechargeable LIPO battery in 15 minutes.

Customer Review: Wicked cool, but design could use some work
It’s pretty stinking amazing that Air Hogs can make cheap remote control stuff, and this is a fun toy, but there are definitely limitations. All told, there’s not a whole lot of control over what the things chooses to do, but I’m giving it 4 stars anyway because it’s still a blast.
Customer Review: Broke 3 Of Them In Less Than 5 Minutes!!!
Absolutely useless is all that I can say about this. They were onsale for $10 each so I bought 7 of these for Xmas gifts (one for myself) NUM 1:Went to use it in my front room, It shot straight up, hit the ceiling, bounced off my tv, hit the wall, crashed to the ground and spun around and tore the rotors apart in approx 5 secs, complete write off. NUM 2: Opened another one and it did exactly the same as the first one. NUM 3: Opened yet another one and it did exactly the same as the first two. The controls are too slow to respond, the helicopter shoots off on its own and hits something before you can react. Forget about using it like on tv, not a chance.Quality is fine until it hits something and destroys itself. In conclusion, it works for a few seconds and then destroys itself. I cant wait to see the faces of my younger cousins at Xmas when I give them it as a present. That is until they try to fly it and it wrecks itself in the first few seconds.

Remembering Anthony Minghella, 1954-2008

Director/writer/producer Anthony Minghella died of a hemorrhage today at the age of 54. He had been undergoing surgery for a growth on his neck. Moviegoers will probably know him best for The English Patient, which won nine Oscars in 1997, including Best Picture and Best Director for Minghella, who also adapted the screenplay. The film, gushed over by many and mocked on Seinfeld, also marked the beginning of Miramax’s reign and independent film’s presence during awards season (yes, the film, which cost $27 million to make, was lumped into the term “independent” at the time).

Minghella, the son of Italian immigrants, grew up in England and started his career directing theater and writing for BBC shows, including Inspector Morse. His first feature film, 1990’s Truly Madly Deeply, starred Juliet Stevenson as a woman visited by her dead boyfriend’s ghost (Alan Rickman) and launched his career as a writer/director. He followed with 1993’s Mr. Wonderful, and then English Patient in 1996.

Jude Law and Juliette Binoche could feasibly owe their Hollywood careers to Minghella; He directed Binoche to a surprise Best Supporting Actress Oscar in English Patient and cast Law in his Patient follow-up, The Talented Mr. Ripley, another literary adaptation. Law was cast as both the object of obsession and victim to Matt Damon’s Tom Ripley. Minghella’s next epic, Cold Mountain, reunited him with Law and won Renee Zellweger an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. He would work with both Law and Binoche one more time on his final film, Breaking and Entering, also starring Robin Wright Penn (pictured, left).

Minghella directed just six feature films in his career, but he wrote each of them and exec-produced countless others, including Michael Clayton. He even turns up on screen in last year’s Atonement, as the interviewer of Vanessa Redgrave’s Briony. His death comes five days before the British television premiere of his latest project, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Here’s to a celebrated–and too short–film career. — Ellen Continue …

We were sorry and very surprised to hear that Anthony Minghella, the director and screenwriter behind The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Cold Mountain, died today following cancer surgery at the age of 54. We’ll leave it to our Movies colleagues to say more about him, but I did want to mention a favorite book of mine that’s full of his spirit. It’s one of those oddball books that fits no obvious category and likely missed a lot of attention: disguised as a technical guide but one of the most interesting books on filmmaking (a favorite subject) I’ve read recently. A few years ago, New Riders, a publisher mostly of computer manuals, released Behind the Seen: How Walter Murch Edited Cold Mountain Using Apple’s Final Cut Pro and What This Means for Cinema (an unwieldy subtitle but total catnip to me). Murch is the legendary editor of such movies as The Conversation and Apocalypse Now (and The English Patient), and he’s also perhaps the most fascinating writer on the inside of moviemaking (see In the Blink of an Eye and The Conversations, his book with Michael Ondaatje). He didn’t write Behind the Seen (Charles Koppelman did) but you see the very modern process of digital moviemaking (in which tech support from Apple can be important as the key grip and the best boy) through his eyes. Full of interest in its own right (although it was a bit of an anticlimax for me to watch Cold Mountain after reading so much about its production and find I didn’t think the final result was very good), but of note today for the side portrait it paints of Minghella (standing behind Murch in the photo above), who replaced Francis Ford Coppola as Murch’s most frequent collaborator, and who comes off, as he does in every other account, as a complete prince of a guy: imaginative, open-minded, tireless, and wonderful company. –Tom
